Art and Design
What is the Art and Design curriculum at Lynsted and Norton School? (intent)
The curriculum is focussed on giving our children the experience of using a variety of media and tools. Skills from the earliest stages of development are continuously developed, with increasing independence and creativity built in through focussed sessions and other enrichment activities.
What does Art and Design look like at Lynsted and Norton school? (Implementation and Impact)
The Art curriculum is progressive with the development of skills and knowledge throughout each year in school. These skills and knowledge can be broken down into 5 main areas, mark making and drawing, painting, textiles and collage, malleable materials - sculpture and art appreciation. Each area builds upon the previous years learning as the children use a variety of different materials and techniques.
1. Mark making and drawing
Children will have the opportunity to use a variety of media during their time in school.
EYFS: Children will experiment with mark making and that these can represent things in the real world.
KS1: The children will have the opportunity to mark make using a variety of tools. They will be able to draw recognisably from observation with some detail.
KS2: Observational drawings are accurate using perspective and or shading for depth texture and realism. They have scale and perspective and a consistent level of tone and texture through the majority of a piece. Children are starting to use line and tone to represent a 3D object.
What knowledge will the children have embedded?
Children will be able to select appropriately from a range of mark making tools the equipment needed.
Children will be able to talk about the processes in their art work, using appropriate vocabulary when discussing tools and techniques.
Children will know how, and demonstrate how, to use equipment safely and effectively.
Children will be able to talk about how they are able to use marks on paper to create tone and texture.
2. Painting
Throughout their time in school the children will experiment with a variety of inks, paints and dyes. The children will learn to blend, create and mix and practise layering and tones.
EYFS: Paint can be applied evenly and with some accuracy to create a finished product representing something from the real world..
KS1: Paint will be applied accurately and consistently, including some emergent highlights and lowlights representing depth in the real world.
Children will experiment with pattern.
KS2: The children's painting evidences convincing scale, depth, texture, and tone through the majority of a piece.
Intricate printing patterns are created by simplifying and modifying designs.
Use techniques colours, tones and effects in appropriate ways to represent observations.
What knowledge will the children have embedded?
Children will be able to develop skills to mix colours to create the appropriate hue and tone and talk about why this is important.
Children will be able to talk about the processes in their art work, using appropriate vocabulary when discussing media and techniques.
Children will know how, and demonstrate how, to use equipment safely and effectively.
3. Textiles and collage
Children will be taught how to use a variety of textiles and other material in different ways. Skills of layering, over lapping etc. to create texture and different tone will be developed along side the skill of decorating using sewing.
EYFS:
KS1: Children will experience sorting, cutting and shaping fabrics whilst exploring ways of joining them. They
le to make textured collages by folding, crumpling, tearing materials developing decoration skills by using techniques such as running and over stitch to apply decoration.
KS2: Children will experiment with different materials to create a range of effects. Using overlays and layers to create new colours and textures. Children will be able to use electronic images to create artwork.
Children will experiment with different fabric printing techniques and different stitches to add embellishment.
What knowledge will the children have embedded?
Children will be able to select from a variety of materials those that are appropriate for the task and explain their reasoning.
They will be able to use a variety of overlapping and layering techniques to create texture and tone.
Children will be familiar with different printing and dying techniques and can discuss what tools would be needed for each using appropriate vocabulary .
Children will know how, and demonstrate how, to use equipment safely and effectively.
4. Malleable materials - Sculpture
Children will have the opportunity to experiment with a range of media and techniques to create a finished piece. Developing their skills over time.
EYFS:
KS1: Children will use a range of techniques such as rolling, squashing and squeezing in rigid and flexible materials.
KS2: Children will experiment with a range of man made and natural materials. They will be able to reproduce intricate patterns on materials and develop skills in media that enable them to join addition pieces and decoration. They will be able to use pre-learnt skills to manipulate unfamiliar media.
What knowledge will the children have embedded?
Children will be able to select appropriate objects from a range of tools to work on different media and be able to explain their choice
They will be able to use a variety of media to create a 3 dimensional piece.
Children will know how, and demonstrate how, to use equipment safely and effectively.
5. Art appreciation
Children will study a range of artists during their time in school, some chosen to link in with topics and some chosen for their techniques. Children will also learn to evaluate their own and other's work commenting on improvements and strengths.
EYFS:
KS1: Children will be able to talk about what they like about the work of others and have a growing confidence on giving their reasoning. They will have the opportunity to study artistic works and crafts from different cultures and times.
KS2: Children will independently be able to evaluate their own and other's work, using appropriate technical vocabulary, identifying next steps. They can comment on the practices of artists, architects and designers they have studied, discussing key ideas ad techniques.
What knowledge will the children have embedded?
Children will be able to use appropriate technical vocabulary when evaluating their own and others work.
They can talk about a range of artists from different times and cultures, identifying their techniques and motivations.
