The Village Academy

The Village Academy is a group of town, city and village schools that have joined together to provide the very best education for the children in our care and where we believe that education is very much a matter of the individual.

At Lynsted and Norton, we aim to provide a practical broadly balanced mathematics curriculum which will suit the individual needs of our children and show them the usefulness and relevance of Maths in their everyday lives. We place a high priority on mathematical achievement and all classes have at least a daily Maths lesson, with other opportunities to practice these skills such as five-a-day, early work, times tables practice. All work is differentiated to suit the needs of all our children, and challenge is built into every lesson.

We encourage the children to apply what they have learnt in their Maths lessons in practical ways and you will often see children weighing ingredients to cook with, working out averages for team points or teaching other children a concept they have already mastered themselves.

To support the mental dexterity with numbers we learn number facts, such as number bonds and times tables.  These are regularly practiced and tested - often in fun ways like times table bingo or Big Maths Beat That.

Key Instant Recall Facts (KIRFs) are sent home termly to be practiced to support the children's fluency in number recall.

Outside of the daily Maths lessons, children complete their ‘5 a day’ which is where they develop, practice and apply their methods for and understanding of the four operations - addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

We subscribe to Mathletics, which offers appropriate maths activities and games online. Mathletics is used in lessons, but can also be accessed at home. All children have their own log in and teachers track children's activity and how well they do on the tasks they have been set.
