Griffin Class (Year 5 and 6)
Welcome to Griffin Class
On this page you will find information about Griffin class, including the homework set and gentle reminders for up and coming events.
19th September - Outdoor learning
Today the class took all of our learning outside, we learnt how to make fires, made frames from twigs lying around, made paracord bracelets, built shelters and learnt to tie life saving knots.
16th September - Festival of Light Lantern making
Today we had workshops on making willow and paper lanterns which can be used in the Sittingbourne Festival of light. Once these have dried we will store them until they are sent home. The lantern walk is on the 11th of October at 6:30pm.
A message from Mrs Haney and Mr Bull – Term 1
Welcome back to a new school year, we hope you had a wonderful summer. We are looking forward to looking and learning with you this term. Mrs Haney will be teaching in the mornings on Monday and Tuesday and Mr Bull throughout the day on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
Our topic until Christmas (first mention of the word) will be based around the Industrial Revolution. We will be researching about that time in history, how people lived, what impact it had on the world and what factors made this possible.
English this term will link closely to our topic. We will start with a book focussing on what it was like to be a child and poor in Victorian London. Street Child, by Berlie Doherty follows the life of Jim an orphan as he makes his way through the workhouse, child labour and eventually meets a kind man, Barnie (Dr Banardo) who changes his life. We will then move on to looking at ‘The Just So Stories’ by Rudyard Kipling.
Spellings will be tested on a weekly basis, on a Friday we will initially be rehearsing the lower Key Stage 2 spellings and then moving on to learning different spelling rules. We are following the ‘No Nonsense’ scheme for spelling.
There will be an English homework each week which will be based on what we have been learning. This will be set on a Friday and is due back in on Wednesday.
Maths will focus on the four operations, place value and their application. The children will have specific times tables to learn and will be tested on a Thursday or Friday. Here are the Key recall facts we would expect a Year 5 or 6 to be learning.
P.E will be on a Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Sport is central to our curriculum. Andy will teach skills on Wednesday which we will practice with Trolls class on Monday. Rethea Coles will also be doing dance with us on a Friday. Please ensure that P.E kits are in school on those days and any earrings are removed.
In Science this term we will be looking materials.
For an overview of what we have been doing this week in class, please see this week's Newsletter.
There will be parent meetings at regular intervals and appointments to speak with us on other occasions can be booked through the school office.
